Preliminary Exercise (Activity 3): Costume, Hair, and Makeup

Costumes, hair, and makeup are essential for film. These things help to set up the setting and mood. Even the genre itself. These things are used to convey a character’s status or personality. For example, if you see someone with messy hair, dirty clothes, and mascara running down their pale face, you will assume this is a horror movie. Costume, hair, and makeup help to emphasize the character’s emotions and role in the film.     This is the last part of the PowerPoint that I created with my two other teammates. We picked two significant characters in the movie "Hustle" to analyze their costumes. Since this is a basketball movie, we documented their basketball shorts, jersey number, and basketball shoes. I also made sure to go more into depth of the costumes. Coming up with conclusion as to why it's certain color or design. Jewelry also played into the costumes. One of the main characters always wore a necklace, which symbolizes something very important to him. They a

Preliminary Exercise (Activity 3): Acting

Hello everyone,    As many know already, acting plays a huge role in film. When there’s bad acting in a movie, the movie is immediately rated poorly. Acting refers to the art of human representation or interpretation of a character. This is also the most obvious element to observe and analyze. Acting can be analyzed by the manner of their voice, body, and face. Actors portrays a character through their appearance, facial expressions, body language, voice, and mannerisms. The three main styles of acting are classical, naturalistic, and stylized/non-naturalistic. Classical acting focuses on control and precision, rather than emotion orientated. Naturalistic acting is more subtle and realistic. Stylized acting is when their acting is exaggerated.     For this part of the PowerPoint, we had to analyze the acting in the opening film. For this part I worked on it with two other people. I did the definitions of acting and its elements. While the other two each picked a character from the movi

Preliminary Exercise (Activity 3): Setting

Setting is such an important concept to know. It’s more than just the time and place a story occurs in. It helps to create the mood, genre, and even influence the characters’ decisions. It’s also important to know that the setting can change throughout the plot. Setting elements are time period, location, climate, landscape, culture, social and economic status, and moral attitudes. The purpose of setting is to indicate time and place, stress the atmosphere of a place, reveal the codes of characters, create a mood, influence characters’ decisions, reinforce genre, and demonstrate a director’s style.    For this assignment we had to create a PowerPoint about analyzing an opening scene for a movie we chose. This is the second part of the assignment. For this part we had to analyze the setting in the opening scene of hustle. The opening scene consists of multiple areas, since it’s about a basketball scout traveling around the world to recruit someone. It included places such as China, Lon

Preliminary Exercise (Activity 3): Marketing Research

Hello everyone,    During media studies we have been learning about how to engage our audience. This is very important in film because it makes the media product more enjoyable to watch, knowing who the target audience are. A target audience is a group of people that a product is particularly aimed at. It can vary from children to the elderly or be influenced by a specific race. The main way target audience are separated are by influencer audiences, public audiences, demographic profile, and psychographic profile. We have also been learning about different techniques used to attract your target audience. For example, making a movie poster to advertise your movie would be a way of attracting your target audience.    To make sure we understood this concept, we had to make a PowerPoint. I worked with 2 other people on this project. For this project we had to analyze a opening scene of a particular movie. We decided to pick Hustle, a movie directed by Adam Sandler. This projected was divid

Preliminary Exercise 4: Analyzing Setting for National Lampoon's European Vacation PowerPoint Presentation

Setting plays a huge role in film. Setting in film refers to the time and place that the story takes place in. Setting can be in limbo, realistic, and non-realistic. The setting of a story can changer throughout the way. The key characteristics of a film are cinematography, mise en scene, editing, sound, and acting. The most significant characteristics for a film producer would be mise en scene. The following would be in the order of cinematography, sound, acting, and editing. Setting is very important in mise en scene because it reveals codes about the character, creates the mood, and reinforces the genre.     The objective of this assignment was to document and analyze the elements of setting in a media text. Me and my partner created a PowerPoint for this assignment. We were analyzing a 3:36s clip from a movie called "National Lampoon's European Vacation". The movie was about an American family going on a vacation trip to London. Throughout the trip they kept on run

Preliminary Exercise 3B: Introduction to Genre Conventions Bubble Organizer

Now that I know what mise en scene is, I would be doing a bubble diagram. The objective of this assignment was to apply my understanding of how mise en scene codes and their relationship to the genre conversations of a film. Genre in film are categories that use narrative or stylistic components to define films. This is very important to the audience because it helps to determine the characters, plot, setting, and tone. The three genres that I am interested in are horror, comedy, and romance. Horror is intended to scare its audience by having some sort of physical violence or psychological terror. Comedy is intended to make its audience laugh. It’s mostly used to amuse or entertain its audience by exaggerating the situation in a humorous way. Romance is when there is a love story between characters. I am interested in these genres because it gives me a lot of room to work in.     The media text that I created was a poster. I try to add some cool designs to attract my audience. The g

Preliminary Exercise 3A: Introduction to Mise en scene Codes Organizer

Hello everyone,    During media studies class we have been learning about mise en scene. We watched a video called “What is Mise en Scene - How directors Like Kubrick Master the Elements of Visual Storytelling”. This video provided me with a great understanding of the importance of Mise en Scene. Mise en Scene is the placement of actors and scenery on a set. This is very important for storytelling. The elements of Mise en Scene are props, set design, costumes, makeup, color, lighting, blocking, framing, lenses, sound, frame rate, and music. This is very important because it helps to build the mood and atmosphere. This video helped me understand that every prop has a meaning behind. It also tells me how important Mise en Scene is to include in my opening scene. My favorite thing about learning this concept is that it’s an easy concept to grasp. It gives me more confident into making my opening scene, which I am very glad for.
