Setting is such an important concept to know. It’s more than just the time and place a story occurs in. It helps to create the mood, genre, and even influence the characters’ decisions. It’s also important to know that the setting can change throughout the plot. Setting elements are time period, location, climate, landscape, culture, social and economic status, and moral attitudes. The purpose of setting is to indicate time and place, stress the atmosphere of a place, reveal the codes of characters, create a mood, influence characters’ decisions, reinforce genre, and demonstrate a director’s style.
For this assignment we had to create a PowerPoint about analyzing an opening scene for a movie we chose. This is the second part of the assignment. For this part we had to analyze the setting in the opening scene of hustle. The opening scene consists of multiple areas, since it’s about a basketball scout traveling around the world to recruit someone. It included places such as China, London, and many more. I decided to do this part on my own. I found pictures for 3 different places. I analyzed the background, set, costumes, and audio signs to figure out the setting.
This assignment was very helpful in understanding setting. I believe setting is a very important concept to learn when making a film. Without it there wouldn’t be any order and organization. Setting helps to move the story on because it helps to build the mood of each scene. I believe setting plays a key role in film. We need setting to set the mood, genre, and plot. This Preliminary Exercise was a necessary assignment to do, so we can understand the importance that setting plays in film.
