Preliminary Exercise (Activity 3): Costume, Hair, and Makeup

Costumes, hair, and makeup are essential for film. These things help to set up the setting and mood. Even the genre itself. These things are used to convey a character’s status or personality. For example, if you see someone with messy hair, dirty clothes, and mascara running down their pale face, you will assume this is a horror movie. Costume, hair, and makeup help to emphasize the character’s emotions and role in the film.

This is the last part of the PowerPoint that I created with my two other teammates. We picked two significant characters in the movie "Hustle" to analyze their costumes. Since this is a basketball movie, we documented their basketball shorts, jersey number, and basketball shoes. I also made sure to go more into depth of the costumes. Coming up with conclusion as to why it's certain color or design. Jewelry also played into the costumes. One of the main characters always wore a necklace, which symbolizes something very important to him. They also used makeup on this film to create a scar on the hand of a main character. We also made sure to explain how these things tied in with the setting, mood, and genre.

This assignment was difficult to do. The hardest part for me was to connect something so simple into a complex answer. When I would look at the costumes, I would just see them as clothes. I didn't bother looking for the meaning behind the effort and design of each costume. I am glad that this assignment was an eye opener for me. It showed me how much goes into each little design in the costumes. It really does help to set the mood for a scene. I was also glad that I got to work with two other teammates. They helped me by explaining the concept more in depth for me. They gave me great examples that helped me understand this concept. For example, Beauty and the Beast. The scene of them two dancing showed elegance and romance between them, their costume design giving off this mood.

Welcome To My AICE Media Studies Blog!

Welcome Everyone,    Today I will be talking about Media Studies. Media studies is important to study because it helps us understand the motives or intentions behind a media product. What I mean by this is that it is easier to find out the meaning of a media text or a post. For example, when I watch a movie just by the first two minutes, I already know who it was intended for and what direction the plot is going at. It also helps me to choose what media platform I use more wisely. Studying media studies taught me what someone's intended effect is for their media product. For example, when scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, you will see a variety of different users. Some just do it for the likes and others do it fun, while some want to spread awareness of a certain topic. My favorite media product are movies. Watching movies keeps me entertained and at the same time helps me to relax. I feel like most teenagers would like to watch movies because it's a way for...

Preliminary Exercise 5: Introduction to Color in Film - Secondary Colors

As I have mentioned in the previous blog, color in film is very important. Color is separated into multiple categories such as, primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, cool colors, and black/white. Today I would be focusing on secondary colors. Secondary colors are green, orange, and purple. Color in film is used to evoke certain emotions from the audience. Could sometimes be used to juxtapose against one another to send a message, creating dramatic irony. Colors help to elicit psychological reactions, draw the attention to the importance of the details in a frame, set the mood and tone, and represent character traits.     For this part we got scenes from various movies that had the lighting as secondary colors. We analyzed the colors and explained as to why the cinematographer would add this specific color. We also made to sure to explain what the color was supposed to evoke from the audience. Such as if the scene was supposed to convey a pity, sympat...
