Hello everyone,
During Media Studies class, we have been learning about the importance of shot sizes in camerawork. Camerawork is the way a camera is used. Shot sizes is how much of the setting or subject is shown in the frame. Shot sizes include close-up, medium close-up, extreme close-up, medium shot, cowboy shot, wide shot, establishing shot, and full shot. Shot sizes help filmmakers to emphasize specific emotions, ideas, and movements for each scene. For example, the establishing shot helps to establish the location and environment of a scene. This helps to emphasize the mood and gives the audience visual codes regarding the setting and plot.
For this assignment, I had to create a digital camerawork organizer. This was divided into 4 sections: shot sizes, camera angles, camera framing, and camera composition. For this post, I will be focusing on the shot size section. For this part, I had to take pictures of the scenes I am going to film in my movie. These pictures included all of the shot sizes such as the establishing shot, full shot, and master shot. I had to provide the definition and purpose for each shot size. These pictures were also based on the drawings I made to come up with my movie. To take these pictures, I had to act as both a cameraperson and a director. I also wrote the action line for each picture. I then stated the genre, tone, and central idea of the shot.
In my opinion, shot sizes are a key concept in filmmaking. Shot sizes are a necessary concept to learn because this is how filmmakers are able to emphasize specific emotions for each scene. This helps to navigate the whole plot, which makes the movie interesting. For this assignment, I worked with various people. I worked with one other person to make the digital camerawork organizer, but I also had to work with other people to create my scenes. This was a fun experience for me because I got to interact with my peers and learn new things, such as what a director really does. This has been one of my favorite assignments to do because it really opens my eyes to the importance of everyone's roles in the film industry.
