Preliminary Exercise 2: Barthes’ Theory Semiotic Analysis of the Hunger Games Catching Fire Table 2

After I was done with the first part of Preliminary Exercise 2, I started to work on the second part. This part required us to watch a media text and look for signs that supports the clip's genre and narrative. I had to document prominent signs in the clip and their denotative and connotative meanings. The media text was a clip from the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a movie that takes place in an era that the world is overpopulated. This required them to select one person from each district to take place in a survival game, only leaving one person alive. This clip from the Hunger Games took place after there were two survivors for the first time. They were being interviewed with other contestants to take place in the Hunger Games again. While watching this clip I took notes of both audio and visual signs. To do this I had to examine the characters, costumes, acting, setting, color, lighting, sound, etc.

Me and my partner picked three different signs to analyze. The signs were facial expressions, costumes, and an audio sign. Throughout this clip the facial expression of the interviewer helped to elevate the mood. In the beginning he was cheerful and energetic, while getting closer to the end he had a frown on his face to show that the mood was getting tense. In the type of world, fashion was a huge deal. Regular people mainly just wore plain clothing while the higher ups wore big dresses with big hairstyles that looks kind of funny for us. We chose to analyze the main character dress that changed from an elegant, white dress to a thin, dark blue dress with wings representing a mockingbird. Our other sign was an audio sign, which was when they turned off the sound. After the main character said something shocking, they turned off the noise to emphasize the tense mood.

This assignment was very helpful for me to understand that every prop or sound effect has a meaning behind it. This helped me come with more ideas for my movie. For example, I have the option to make the background noise as a creepy sound or completely silent. It also conveys the importance of costumes and makeup as they helped to set the setting and era of the world. Both of these will emphasize the mood. This assignment also helped me to improve in analyzing denotative and connotation meanings, helping me in Component 3.

Thank you for reading!

Welcome To My AICE Media Studies Blog!

Welcome Everyone,    Today I will be talking about Media Studies. Media studies is important to study because it helps us understand the motives or intentions behind a media product. What I mean by this is that it is easier to find out the meaning of a media text or a post. For example, when I watch a movie just by the first two minutes, I already know who it was intended for and what direction the plot is going at. It also helps me to choose what media platform I use more wisely. Studying media studies taught me what someone's intended effect is for their media product. For example, when scrolling through TikTok or Instagram, you will see a variety of different users. Some just do it for the likes and others do it fun, while some want to spread awareness of a certain topic. My favorite media product are movies. Watching movies keeps me entertained and at the same time helps me to relax. I feel like most teenagers would like to watch movies because it's a way for...

Research: Digital Camerawork Organizer: Camera Framing

Hello everyone,     During Media Studies class, I have been learning about the importance of camera framing in camerawork. Camera framing refers to how you place and position subjects and objects in shots. This is more about composing an image rather than pointing the camera at the subject. Camera framing helps to convey the relationship of subjects to other objects. The different types of camera frames are one shot, two shot, three shot, four shot, crowd shot, over the shoulder shot, and insert shot.     For the third part of the assignment, we had to create a digital camerawork organizer focusing on camera framing. To create this digital camerawork organizer, we decided to use a word document. I had to include the definition and list two purposes for each camera frame. Then I went with my partner to take pictures of my shots. I then wrote the action line for each shot. I included the tone, genre, and central idea for each shot.     Th...

Preliminary Exercise 6: Introduction to Camerawork Warm-Up

Greetings everyone,     Lately, I have been learning about camerawork in media studies. Camerawork is the way something is being filmed. This plays into the framing, angles, shots, movements, and composition. In class we were mainly focused on shot sizes and camera angles. Shot size is how much of the setting or subject is displayed within a frame of a shot. Camera angles marks a specific location at which the camera is placed to take the shot. Filmmakers uses this to emphasize specific emotions, ideas, and movement for each scene.     We went through the different types of shot sizes. Such as full shot, wide shot, master shot, establishing shot, medium shot, medium full shot, medium close up, close up, and extreme close up. We also learned about the different types of camera angles such as, high angles, low angles, eye level, Dutch, overhead, hip level, knee level, and ground level. We took notes on a video called “Ultimate Guide to Camera Shots: Every Sh...
